The joys of chilled food...

Yes, at last I have a fridge! After over a year of trying to keep my milk cold and preventing food growing legs and walking out of the van, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a fridge.

After a lot of research I decided to go with a snazzy little number, which is just about big enough for the necessities and a few non necessities (mini Wispa bites anyone?!). The Dometic Coolmatic CRX 50 has a 45 litres storage capacity with an optional 4.4 litre of freezer space. It wasn't cheap at £550 but totally worth the expense and has radically changed the way I eat in the van... I had missed frozen peas so much!

My next issue was where to install it...as you will know by now if you are a regular reader of my blog, I like to change my mind a lot, so my many previous plans went out the window and I decided to redesign the van (again)! If you remember, I had a pine chest in the van providing toilet, coolbox, clothing and map storage... well I got rid of that - in my defense it was a bit rickety and the drawer bottoms kept falling out - and scoured the internet for something that may suit my new design better. I was in luck, as I found a beautiful unit just down the road on Facebook Marketplace, which I was certain would be perfect for my new idea.

I'm always after extra worktop space and so thought if I could get a longer unit, like a sideboard, then I could use it for storage, the fridge and also have lots of extra functional worktop area. So here we are... tah dah!

To fit the fridge, I just removed the small drawers, added some timber batons for it to stand on and to secure it to. I used the flush mount to help secure it and to give it a nice finish. There is plenty of room for air to circulate and I added silver bubble foil to the underside of the drawer above the fridge to reflect any heat away. I'm still in debates with myself as to whether to paint the unit or not...

But there we have it, a simple installation, extra storage and cold milk in the mornings...Bliss!

So the van is nearly there... small wardrobe to install next to the bed, spot of painting and I still need to fit my water pump, but otherwise, I'm really chuffed with how Buttercup is looking and feel she's ready for the adventures to come.

What do you think? Let me know, and tell me what items you couldn't live without in your little home on wheels.
